Etymology: Honoring Eugène Nielen Marais (1872–1936), South African naturalist, poet, and writer who lived on a farm in the Waterberg district of northwestern Transvaal where this species grows and who first reported this species to his niece, Dr. Inez Verdoorn, who formally described it. [source]
