Cycas riedlei Fisch. ex Gaudich. [WFO] [IPNI] [POWO] [MO]

First published in: Voy. Uranie, Bot.: 434. (1829). [BHL]

Nomenclature notes: This name is the conserved basionym of Macrozamia riedlei (Fisch. ex Gaudich.) C.A.Gardner. Calonje & Clugston (2022) proposed conserving Cycas riedlei Fisch. ex Gaudich. against the earlier homonym C. riedlei Dum. Cours., whose application is ambiguous (Taxon 71: 1113–1115). The Nomenclature Committee for Vascular Plants recommended the proposal 16–1 in 2024 (Report 75), and the General Committee accepted it 25–2 later that year (Report 31). Conservation permits this name to serve as the basionym and preserves the familiar name and authorship of Macrozamia riedlei. Gardner's transfer was effected by indirect reference; that issue is summarized on the accepted-name record.
Nomenclatural Type Information
Collector:
Leschenault
Locality:
Nouv. Hollande, Baye du Geographe
Type location(s):
CT:P; ET:PERTH
Type notes:
Calonje & Clugston (2022: 1113–1115) selected as the type proposed for conservation: [Western Australia], ‘Nouv. Hollande, Baye du Geographe’, Leschenault (P, barcode P04023803). They explained that the specimen is either original material (and therefore a lectotype) or otherwise a neotype, depending on whether Gaudichaud-Beaupré examined it. Following approval of the conservation proposal, it is treated as the conserved type.

Because the P specimen is sterile and was collected at a locality different from that cited in the protologue, the same proposal designated an epitype: Australia, Western Australia, Bornholm, 32 km W of Albany on Old Denmark Road, 8 Oct 1993, K.D. Hill 4557 (PERTH, two cross-referenced sheets, nos. 6306853 and 6306861). Typification was published in Taxon 71: 1113–1115.

This name is considered a synonym of Macrozamia riedlei (Fisch. ex Gaudich.) C.A.Gardner
