Abstract

Ceratozamia popolucana sp. nov., a newly discovered cycad species from Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve, Veracruz, Mexico, is described and compared with C. subroseophylla and C. dominguezii. The species is characterized by shorter and thinner trunks, shorter leaves, cherry-red emerging leaves with yellowish to whitish tomentum, olive-green leaflets, and light-green emerging female cones. The authors preliminarily assess it as Critically Endangered (CR B2ab(iii)).
