Etymology: From the Latin opinus (‘expected’), with the modifying prefix in- (‘not’), referring to “[t]he coincidence of the discovery of an ‘unexpected’ new species of Encephalartos and on a farm with the name ‘Onverwagt’ [‘unexpected’ in Dutch]” (Dyer 1964).[15] [source]
