Although the type specimen was collected in Oaxaca, Nicolalde-Morejón et al. (2024) only located populations they consider to be this species in Veracruz, northern Chiapas, and Tabasco, mentioning the following: "Although no record of Zamia with these morphological characters has been found in southeastern Oaxaca, it is possible that Z. lawsoniana occurs there as well, though this area has been affected by high rates of deforestation, mainly due to cattle ranching."Synonymy notes: Previously considered a synonym of Zamia loddigesii. Reinstated as an accepted species by Nicolalde-Morejón et al. (2024, Acta Botanica Mexicana 131: e2262; https://doi.org/10.21829/abm131.2024.2262)
